Why Go Further?
European design events. Milan, London, Paris, Cologne. Form the backbone of most UK designers' calendars. But limiting yourself to Europe means missing perspectives, markets, and creative energy that can't be replicated on this side of the Atlantic or Mediterranean. Here are five international events in 2026 that justify the long-haul investment.
1. ICFF New York (17-19 May)
ICFF at the Javits Center is North America's premier contemporary design fair, and the centrepiece of NYCxDESIGN. New York's city-wide design festival. With 400+ international brands and a public day (Tuesday 19 May), it's more accessible than many European trade fairs. The real draw is the broader NYCxDESIGN programme: gallery openings, studio tours, and pop-up exhibitions across Manhattan and Brooklyn that showcase American design at its most inventive. Combine with a day at the city's design museums (MoMA, Cooper Hewitt, MAD) and the trip writes its own business case.
2. NeoCon Chicago (8-10 June)
If commercial interiors are your focus, NeoCon is the global benchmark. Held at theMART. A building so large it has its own CTA station inside. The show brings together 450+ brands covering workplace, hospitality, healthcare, and institutional design. Entry is free with registration. The 2026 edition introduces a Preview Day on Sunday 7 June. Chicago in June is glorious, and theMART's riverside location makes for excellent post-show socialising.
3. Design Shanghai (19-22 March)
Asia's leading design fair at the art deco Shanghai Exhibition Centre showcases 500+ brands from 20+ countries, with a unique fusion of Eastern and Western design philosophy. If you're looking to understand the Chinese luxury market, source from Asian manufacturers, or simply see what the world's most dynamic consumer market considers desirable, Design Shanghai is the entry point. Public days Saturday-Sunday make it accessible beyond the trade crowd.
4. Dubai Design Week (3-8 November)
The Middle East's largest creative festival is mostly free and growing fast. 135,000+ visitors in 2025. Dubai Design District (d3) provides a concentrated, walkable setting, and the Downtown Design trade fair running within the festival connects you with the Gulf's booming hospitality and residential market. If you have (or want) Middle Eastern clients, this is where you build those relationships. November weather in Dubai is perfect.
5. Art Basel Miami Beach + Design Miami (1-6 December)
These twin events close the year with the world's most spectacular convergence of art and collectible design. Art Basel Miami Beach (day tickets $55-75) brings the world's leading galleries; Design Miami ($30-40) presents museum-quality collectible furniture and limited editions. The satellite fairs, museum openings, and cultural programme make Miami Beach in December the design world's best party. Book accommodation early. The whole city fills up.
Making the Case
The business justification for international travel is threefold: market intelligence (what are clients in other regions demanding?), supplier relationships (who's making what, and can they ship to your projects?), and creative fuel (experiences that shift your perspective). Each of these five events delivers on all three counts. Pick one, commit to it, and go with an open mind.
