Why Awards Matter
Architecture and design awards do more than decorate mantlepieces. They shape public perception of what good design looks like, influence commissioning decisions, and provide shortlisted practices with a level of media exposure that no marketing budget can match. Following the awards calendar also gives you a curated tour of the year's most significant buildings and design projects. A free education in what's working and why.
Workspace Design Awards (25 February)
The inaugural Workspace Design Awards launch in 2026 as part of the Workspace Design Show at London's Business Design Centre. Categories span office refurbishment, new-build workspace, co-working design, and technology integration. The ceremony runs 5:30-7:30pm on 25 February, followed by networking. Free with Workspace Design Show registration. As a first-edition award, the bar for entry may be slightly lower. Making 2026 a good year to submit.
CDW Awards (19 May)
The Clerkenwell Design Week Awards, expanded for 2026 in partnership with Design Milk, celebrate product and project excellence across the UK design community. Held at Haberdashers' Hall on the opening evening of CDW, the ceremony is free for registered visitors. The 2026 expansion includes new categories for "people shaping the future of design". Watch for these as a barometer of where the industry's narrative is heading.
RIBA Stirling Prize (October)
The big one. The RIBA Stirling Prize, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2026, is the UK's most prestigious architecture award. The shortlist announcement (typically September) generates intense media coverage and public debate. The ceremony (October, exact date TBC) is by invitation, but the associated exhibition at RIBA North in Liverpool. Featuring models, drawings, and photography of the shortlisted buildings. Is free and open to the public from 21 November. A special James Stirling retrospective is planned. Even if you never attend the ceremony, following the Stirling Prize longlist-to-winner narrative is the best way to stay literate in British architecture.
Beyond the UK
Internationally, keep an eye on the Pritzker Prize (typically announced March/April), the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (triennial, next in 2028), and the EU Mies Award (biennial). For product and furniture design, the Compasso d'Oro (announced during Milan Design Week) and the Dezeen Awards (autumn) are the ones to watch. Together with the UK prizes above, they form a year-round programme that keeps you connected to what the profession values most.
